Don't Lose Them: Use Your 2025 Dental Benefits Before They Expire
With the end of 2025 rapidly approaching, your dental insurance plan may not be on your mind. However, if you have dental benefits through your employer or a flexible spending account (FSA) set up for dental expenses, your plan likely expires at the end of the year, putting you at risk of leaving money on the table unused.
If you haven’t utilized all of your dental benefits, the end of the year will see them gone for good. At Andreacola Family Dentistry in Marlton, New Jersey, Lynn M. Andreacola, DMD, and the rest of our team want you to maximize the benefits of what you’re already paying for.
In this month’s blog, we break down what dental benefits are and how to use them with us as this year comes to a close.
Understanding dental benefits and their expiration
There are several avenues through which you can get dental insurance. You may get them through your employer, independently, or through the Health Insurance Marketplaces provided by the Affordable Care Act.
No matter where you’ve purchased a dental insurance plan, you pay a monthly amount (your premium) to have part of your dental care covered. If you don’t ever see your dentist, dollars put toward your premium are wasted because those benefits don’t roll over from year to year.
While Dec. 31 is typically the date that most dental insurance plans expire, it’s not a guarantee that your insurance has that deadline. Check with your employer or insurance provider to review your specific benefits package.
What your insurance covers
If you’re looking to capitalize on your dental benefits before they expire at the end of 2025, below are services and procedures that most dental insurance plans cover.
Preventive care
Most dental care plans cover 100% of routine preventive care services. This includes annual or biannual cleanings and office visits. Seeing our team regularly for these visits mitigates your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
Restorative care
Basic restorations and care, such as fillings, root canals, extractions, and treatment for gum disease, are typically mostly covered by dental plans. The amount your insurance covers varies from provider to provider.
The cost of some of these procedures can add up quickly, so be sure to use your 2025 dental benefits to cover a good portion of the expense.
Prosthodontic care
Major prosthodontic treatments — such as crowns, bridges, dental implants, and dentures — are typically covered at the lowest percentage. However, these procedures can be costly outside of insurance coverage, so taking advantage of your benefits package is worth it.
Orthodontic care
Orthodontic treatments, such as braces and Invisalign®, may be covered by insurance, but it’s not always a guarantee. If crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw are putting you at risk for oral health issues, it’s worth looking into orthodontics for optimal long-term oral health — and now’s a good time to start before your benefits expire.
