Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system of clear aligners that are custom made for your mouth. They fit snugly over your teeth and straighten them just like metal braces, but Invisalign is almost invisible. A series of custom-made aligners, that you switch out every couple weeks, move your teeth slightly with each set until you reach your goal.

Invisalign is a popular system with teens because it’s less noticeable and you can take out the aligners to eat and clean your teeth. The system works well for adults who want to correct alignment issues, but prefer not to go the metal braces route.

Can Invisalign help me?

Invisalign can help correct many problems with teeth alignment, including:

Overcrowding

An overcrowded mouth happens when you don’t have enough space in your mouth for your teeth to align normally. Overcrowding can cause crooked teeth and may even lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Large gaps between teeth

You can have large gaps because you’re missing a tooth or when one or more spaces between your teeth are too wide. These gaps can also create problems for your gums and even lead to bone loss in your jaw.

Crossbite

When your upper and lower jaws are misaligned, it causes one or more upper teeth to bite inside of the lower teeth. This is called a crossbite, and it can cause premature wear of your teeth and dysfunctional chewing patterns.

Overbite

This problem occurs when the upper teeth project further than, or completely cover, the lower teeth. It may lead to upper gum damage if the bottom teeth hit the gums when your mouth is closed. Over time it can lead to TMJ joint problems and wear of your lower teeth.

Underbite

This is the inverse of the overbite; the lower teeth project further than, or completely cover, the upper teeth. With this condition, the front teeth and molars can’t function properly, and jaw problems may develop over time.

What should I expect during my Invisalign treatment?

During your initial consultation with Dr. Andreacola, she examines your teeth and discusses your needs. She then takes 3-D digital images of your entire jaw. This helps her develop your treatment plan -- and also show you what your new smile will look like. She then maps out the number of trays you’ll need.

Once she’s developed your custom plan, she makes the first unique set of aligners.  The total number of aligners needed varies for each person, but 20-29 sets is typical. To get the most out of your Invisalign aligners, you should wear them 20-22 hours a day, taking them out only to brush, floss, and eat.
